Built mid 17th Century for the French Knight Jacques de Verdelin, the eponymous Hostel de Verdelin is a fine example of Early Baroque architecture, and whose façade, reputed as one of the finest in Malta, is listed as Grade 1 National Monument. The Palazzo, featuring an interior storied courtyard, has enjoyed a colourful history. During the French Occupation Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the Order of St John’s coat of arms defaced, presumably with musket shot (this can be seen at the corner of Archbishop Street and Strait Street) and narrowly avoided being destroyed by the Luftwaffe, the corner of St George’s Square took a direct hit and is now home to HSBC. Under British rule it became one of Malta’s first hotels, the Viceroy, and it was during this period the original stone balconies were replaced by the wooden boxed versions which can been seen today. The Palazzo was expropriated by the new Republic of Malta, was involved in a government scandal in 2015 and title is still being contested in the courts today. It currently hosts Gracy’s Bar & Brasserie and Valletta Police station. Naturally, we would encourage you to visit the former as opposed to the latter.
